PROPEL is hosting a small-group conversation on raising pre-Series A funds for early stage life sciences companies.
Moderator:
Harry Arader, President, The Centromere Group
Through the Centromere Group, Mr. Arader is currently Acting CEO of Midway Food Animal Sciences and a Director of Midway Pharmaceuticals Inc., both spin-outs from the University of Chicago. He is Board Chairman of BeyondLive.com which successfully closed its “A” round financing in Q409. He was Co-Founder, Acting CEO and a Director of Nanodisc Inc. a spin-out from the University of Illinois. Mr. Arader served as Senior Business Advisor for StrataTech Corp. a Madison, WI-based biotechnology company which successfully raised over $3.5 million in non-dilutive funding during Mr. Arader’s engagement. He also served as Senior Business Advisor for BioDisplay Technologies Inc., a directed evolution platform biotechnology company in Urbana Illinois from shortly after that company’s inception in 1999 until it was sold to Abbott Laboratories. Mr. Arader acted as Chief Business Officer and as a Business Development Consultant to Orion Genomics LLC, a successful genomics-based, epigenetic discovery company in St. Louis MO. Mr. Arader wrote the “Strategic Plan for the Biotechnology Industry” for the State of Illinois in 1997-98, and was the lead consultant to the U of I for the creation of IllinoisVENTURES. Mr. Arader was Chief Financial Officer for Millennium Pharmaceuticals Inc. and led that company’s successful IPO in 1996. Prior to Millennium, Mr. Arader spent 13 years in various roles in “Big Pharma” companies Merck and Searle where his responsibilities included Marketing, Business Development, Strategic Planning and Country Management. Mr. Arader received his MBA from the Wharton School of Business in 1983.

During this small-group workshop, Mr. Arader will lead a discussion of funding alternatives drawing on his extensive experience in seed-stage companies in the life sciences. The discussion will touch on basic fundraising topics including:

Non-dilutive funding
Convertible note structures
Angel financing
Seed-stage venture financing
How the fundraising process works
The realities of the current fund-raising environment
