Advancements in nanotechnology are at the forefront of scientific development, with key ongoing research in the Chicago area. The International Institute for Nanotechnology at Northwestern University will present a series of free, public events as an opportunity to learn more about this field. The Nanotechnology Town Hall Meetings will focus on a basic introduction to the fundamentals of nanoscale science and an open discussion of the potential applications and ethical implications of this evolving field.
Professor Chad Mirkin will speak on December 19 at the downtown Chicago Campus. Mirkin is one of the most frequently cited chemists in the world, founder of Nanosphere, Inc. and NanoInk, Inc, and Rathmann Professor of Chemistry. His research interests include the architecture of molecules and materials on the nano-scale and potential applications in medicine and diagnostics. Professor Mark Ratner will speak on January 8 on the Evanston campus. Dr. Ratner is Morrison professor of Chemistry and Director of the Center for Nanofabrication and Molecular Self Assembly. His research in theoretical chemistry includes interests in areas such as electron transfer, reaction dynamics, and DNA/protein binding. Both talks will be moderated by Professor Laurie Zoloth, professor of Medical Humanities and Bioethics.
Attendance is free and open to the public but registration is required. For registration and additional information please visit www.nsec.northwestern.edu/townhalls.htm. Sponsored by the Illinois Science Council, the International Institute for Nanotechnology, the Northwestern University Nanoscale Science and Engineering Center and Center for Cancer Nanotechnology Excellence.
